What is therapeutic riding?
Therapeutic riding is an accepted form of alternative exercise for disabled populations. While the merits of physical exercise are indisputable, children with disabilities are often excluded from the very activities that would benefit them the most. Therapeutic riding provides an alternative form of exercise ideally suited to this population. It is becoming recognized among the medical and therapy communities as valuable treatment modalities, especially for clients who are "therapy tired" or who have reached progress plateaus.
How does it work?
While the rider sits on the back of a horse, his or her upper and lower body muscles and joints are exercised. In addition, spastic patterns in muscles are decreased, balance and coordination are challenged, range of motion is enhanced, and strength and endurance gradually improve. These effects occur regardless of the rider's physical abilities. The lessons also may incorporate the development of various education skills, such as the alphabet, colors, work association, and sequential thinking. This is beneficial for students with Attention Deficit Disorders, Autism, and other emotional and mental challenges.
